The Gemini - X - The Wings of an Angel

"She'll wake up soon enough" mused Vernon. Through the ... incident ... with Julian and Reynold, he had managed to knock out Sarah and got her to his 'special' place. "He'll be looking for her... I know he will". But something was troubling him. When he saw that kid in his mind and he felt strange. As he looked at the prone body of Sarah he pondered the next course of action. As she stirred from her slumber he started smiling.

Julian awoke with a jolt. As he regained his composure, the stench of fresh human feces filled his nostrils to the point of him dry heaving. He was so close to what he wanted to do, yet he was so far. What the hell was that kid thinking?!?! He should not even have been able to bloody walk! As he tried to compose himself, he began thinking of the woman he saw. Could it have been her? Why didn't she recognise him?

Reynold was in pain, but the beeping of machines and the sickeningly sweet smell of the hospital room he was in told him that at least he was alive. As he slowly opened his eyes the image of Inspector Cameldo began to focus. "Who did this to you?" she asked softly as she gently held his hand. He didn't know what to say. He knew what Vernon had done, but he was the closest thing that he had ever had to a father - even with the hurt he had received he was much better than what he had grown up with. He also knew though, that for once in his life he had to do the right thing.

Julian knew why he was doing what he was doing. He knew it was wrong. He knew he had fallen from the path of 'good'. He thought he didn't care, but deep down he knew that he did. When he saw Sarah... or was it Jeanette?... something was trying to remind him of who he really was. "But... it feels so... good", he kept trying to justify himself with. He needed to make Vernon pay for what he had done. Not just to all those people, but for what he had done to him as well. He needed to find her, but he didn't know where to even start looking.

Lightning bolts of pain flew through Sarah's brain as Vernon sliced through her left elbow. He slowly moved the blade along her arm, pausing every now and again to lean in and smell the sweet iron-like smell of her blood as it flowed effortlessly from the cuts. Although she tried to scream, the gag that was in her mouth made it sound like a mere whisper.

"Dear God" was all that Cameldo could think. What the kid had told her made her mind reel. Two people? Who are the same? But not? Are they the same person? Is this yet another crazy idiot who has a God complex? The fact of the matter was... and is... is that she needed to stop them. As she ran out of the hospital, she knew that this was a lot bigger than her, and she needed help - lots of help. She knew that a lot more terrible things were going to happen and prayed that she wasn't too late.

Julian decided to take a walk to try and clear his mind. He didn't know where he was going nor where he would end up. He just knew that he had to walk. As he wondered aimlessly through the streets - strangely similar streets - Julian noticed an abandoned house. He knew for some reason he had to go in.

Vernon heard the footsteps as they approached. "Shit. Who the FUCK is that?!" he thought as he quickly slunk into the verges of darkness that permeated the house.

He opened the door as silently as he could, even though it sounded like a buffalo rampaging through a glass shop. The hairs on the back of his head rose as he sensed something... wrong. As he walked through from the kitchen to the living room he saw Sarah strapped to a table, wounds weeping like a running tap. He ran to her and ripped off the straps and picked her up. Through barely open eyes she barely whispered "Are you an angel? If you are, please will you fly me away?", before passing out.

Vernon watched from the shadows and smiled. "Right into my playbook you prick!", he thought to himself.

Doctor James was on the last part of his almost 27 hour shift and was ready to call it when a large well-built frantic man ran into the emergency room carrying a woman in his arms. "Doctor!!!! I need a dotor!!!!!!!!!!" was all that the man could scream. His weary mind suddenly awoke and kicked into action as he glanced over the wounds of the hapless young woman and yelled "NURSE!!!! Get me 5 pints of blood!!!! STAT!!! And call the cops!!!!"

Julian needed to breathe. He need to compose himself. He was now a wanted man and he had just taken some woman he thought he knew to a hospital? A public place?! As the police sirens rang closer and closer, he had no idea what he was going to do. In his heart he knew that he had done the right thing, whether she was who he thought he was or not. But what was he going to do now?

EDITOR'S NOTE

From the phrase "when days are dark, friends are few" stems another interesting perspective. That person who gave you more than 'a helping hand'. That person you can always count on. That person who would give their all for you. Hopefully you know them, and give them the acknowledgment that they deserve. Because you know that without them you would have fallen and no-one else would have picked you up to let you fight another day. For all that you have and for all that you are, you know there is that one person who picked you up from the depths of your despair and gave you the courage to be more than you thought you could be. When last were you on the wings of an angel?
